Power Solutions Division

The Langley Holdings Power Solutions Division is focused on the development of hybrid-renewable microgrids based on a collaboration between our Bergen Engines, Marelli Motori and Piller Power Systems subsidiaries. The aim is to meet immediate and future microgrid requirements efficiently and cost-effectively, while reducing emissions to a minimum.

The division supports many aspects of microgrid implementation and management, including balancing and stabilization of renewable energy sources, ensuring stable power supply 24/7.

H₂-ready combustion engines from Bergen Engines, incorporating Marelli Motori alternators, can start up fast and maintain high efficiency levels at part-load operation, always keeping emissions and fuel consumption low. Piller’s stabilisation and storage systems make it possible to optimise the various power sources in a microgrid, thereby reducing investment and operational costs.

The combined offering will ensure flexible, reliable and cost-effective power supply at all times.

The Power of 10

The Power of 10 approach to Microgrid power has been developed around modular hydrogen ready 10MW gas-fired gensets that can be paralleled from 30MW to 300MW and beyond.

This standardized component-based solution is deployable with all variable renewable energy resources (VRERs), stand-alone or in conjunction with the grid.

Bergen Engines, formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines, of Norway provide modular Microgrid power solutions in collaboration with sister companies Marelli Motori of Italy and Piller Power Systems of Germany.

Now part of the Power Solutions Division of British engineering group Langley Holdings plc, our Microgrid offering meets immediate and future power requirements with a modular solution that is scalable, rapidly deployable and cost-effective.

Seamless integration of primary power and electricity generation combined with Integrated Power Conditioning & Switching (IPCS) technology, provides total or partial grid independence, either stand-alone or in conjunction with renewables.

Bergen Medium-Speed Engines with Marelli Motori Alternators

Bergen Engines is a leading manufacturer of medium speed liquid and gas-fueled engines and gensets. With high availability and efficiency levels, combined with excellent capability to meet quick and frequent load changes, Bergen’s engines combine perfectly with intermittent renewable energy resources that need balancing power. For Microgrid applications, Bergen’s largest single genset unit provides 11,830 kWe of power. These 10MW+ machines can easily be paralleled in modular ‘grow as you need’ deployments to more than 100MW for large industrial clusters and campus Microgrids for any application in any environment no matter how hostile. This makes them suitable for every type of Microgrid dedicated deployment, whether islanded or grid integrated.

By providing modular power in 10MW standard chunks using Gensets microgrid developers benefit from fast to deploy primary and back-up power which will accelerate protect return on value. Bergen Engines Medium speed liquid fuel engines are hydrogen ready and have a clear sustainability roadmap to liquid natural gas (LNG) to LNG/hydrogen blend and ultimately to pure Hydrogen operation delivering zero carbon, clean, efficient power. The use of rotating machines in conjunction with batteries provides the stability not always seen with IGBT inverters plus battery. Rotary technology has immediately available benefits to solve problems when switching between different power sources.

Bergen Engines features include:

  • Medium speed Engines provide many advantages for the Microgrid market including high efficiency at long run times which uses less fuel.
  • Options for low load continuous running can be applied to Microgrid projects with intermittent RER primary power.
  • Hot standby for primary grid loss.
  • Through simple paralleling Bergen engines scale to tens and even 100s of MWs.

Genset based primary powered Microgrids at tens of MW scale perfectly fill the gap between traditional large remote turbine power and local power generation for specific applications. They are not restricted to use by large energy outfits but are ideal for many emerging power intensive applications across different sectors (oil and gas, mining, large manufacturing, data centre campuses etc) which will increasingly depend on Microgrid power.

Marelli Motori supply efficient alternators for Microgrid fast start. In a year long collaboration with Bergen Engines Marelli has developed a 10MW generator for use with Bergen’s biggest engine. In just over one year, the Italian electrical motor has developed three new Marelli Motori generator series, including the most powerful generator it ever designed.

The combined offering from Bergen Engines, Piller Power Systems and Marelli Motori, aims to meet the immediate requirements for microgrid balancing and stabilisation while mapping a path to eradicating carbon.

Piller – Stabilisation and Storage

Piller is a world-leading producer of power conditioning equipment and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to mission-critical power applications.

Under the Power Solutions Division banner Piller solutions for Microgrids provide vital frequency and voltage stabilisation and grid gate technology that protects against outages in Microgrids whether integrated or in island mode.

The Power of 10 features Piller's Integrated Power Conditioning & Switching technology (IPCS). IPCS is a power stabilisation and voltage regulation module coupled to the power generation module (or renewables source). It comprises 4 x Piller 2.5MW UB-V Series UPS modules electrically coupled to the power module via a single 10MW choke. Conditioned power is then distributed as required up to 10MW per IPCT module.

Piller’s focus on frequency and voltage delivers fast response Microgrid stabilisation whatever the nature of the primary energy source, e.g. integrated with existing main grids, directly linked to local RERs, or on site generation.
