3.6 MW UPS Systems with Li-Ion Energy Storage installed at German Data Centre

Piller Power has installed UPS systems with lithium-ion battery back-up with a total capacity of 3.6 MW in a major German data centre.

The selection of a high efficiency UPS from Piller combined with a large-scale deployment of lithium-ion batteries fits perfectly within the long-term greenhouse gas abatement strategy of the data centre operator.

Data centre operators across the world rely on the proven UPS technology from Piller for its high availability and reliability of power supply.

The UPS deployment of lithium-ion batteries is based on a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cell chemistry.

The li-ion batteries are designed for UPS applications and ancillary power backup in mission-critical facilities such as data centres.

The li-ion batteries used have passed UL Standard 9540A stringent fire safety test certification and do not require built-in fire suppression systems. As a result, these batteries can be easily installed inside the building and most existing oxygen reduction-based fire protection solutions can be used.

A total capacity of 3.6 MW has been installed to date to provide an expected 20 years of protection and sustainable back up. In the event of any power outage the configuration will deliver a bridging time of 7 minutes.

Providing both space saving and greater efficiency a life cycle analysis has forecast a reduction in energy usage due to the favourable energy efficiency of lithium-ion and a significant reduction in CO2 footprint.

The highly available, reliable and safe battery storage solutions fit well with Piller’s UPS technology.

Renowned the world over for their design excellence, build quality and precision engineering the UPS systems are developed and manufactured at Piller’s modern production facility in Germany and feature particularly high reliability, robust construction and high efficiency.

„Our UPS systems are designed for both conventional lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries. The decisive factors for the use of lithium-ion batteries are the high power density and the corresponding compact design, the long operating life and the possibility of running them without restrictions even at high ambient temperatures. The same applies to our UPS systems. This saves energy costs for cooling and reduces the CO2 emissions of a data centre,“ says Dieter Tolsdorf, Sales Director, Piller Germany GmbH & Co. KG.
