The latest new modern factory in Semarang (total area 20ha) was inaugurated on August 28, 2023. This factory is part of the company’s expansion, which also has factories in Sidoarjo and Karawang. It utilizes state of the art high-technology machinery from Germany and is part of their commitment to using modern technology in coffee production.
PT Santos Jaya Abadi has installed the latest cutting-edge warehouse technology with German technology-based automated racking system typically involves high-density storage solutions, often utilizing automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) like stacker cranes or shuttle systems. These systems are designed for efficiency, space optimization, and fast material handling, often incorporating features like precise positioning, high throughput, and temperature adaptability. The new facility boasts the latest robotics and computer control technology in roasting, an advanced complete set of coffee cleaning machines, and modern water-cooling grinding machines.
It is expected to increase efficiency and production capacity to meet growing market demand. PT Santos Jaya Abadi is part of Kapal Api Group, which oversees several business units, including PT Excelso Multirasa, PT Fastrata Buana, and others. This company is known as a producer of various beverage products, including coffee (Kapal Api, Excelso, ABC) and candy.
Piller’s engagement with Kapal Api begun back in 2021 with initial discussions together with local partner PT Arianto Darmawan about potential technical solutions to its power provision and protection. The company chose Piller for an upgrade to its power protection and back-up infrastructure using the latest UB-V UPS technology backed with POWERBRIDGE™ energy storage. The use of the UB-V UPS delivers medium voltage protection which also improves performance by cutting power losses compared to a LV solution.
The project for this new state of the art factory incorporates Piller’s electrically coupled UPS system, based on UNIBLOCK UBT+™ technology with POWERBRIDGE™ PB60+ kinetic energy storage, delivers a total capacity of 3600kW with the option to scale by adding 1800kW units in the future. This critical infrastructure ensures continuous protection for the facility, shielding it from power fluctuations and short-term outages at the 20kV voltage level. The 60MJ+ per unit flywheel is a market leader kinetic flywheel technology providing the ideal back up for the UPS with carbon free operation, long service life, reduced space use and low maintenance.
For Piller, the new factory deployment represents a significant contribution to one of the most advanced coffee roasting coupled with smart warehouse infrastructures in Asia. The project not only demonstrates the technical capability of UNIBLOCK UBT+™ technology at scale but also aligns with the company’s broader goals of enabling energy-efficient, sustainable and reduced maintenance worldwide. The UNIBLOCK UBT+™ with POWERBRIDGE™ PB60+ supports this by eliminating toxic batteries, reducing energy losses and delivering long-lasting, high-efficiency performance.
The Piller solution not only provides big savings on space but additional Capex and Opex savings were realised on air conditioning infrastructure which was no longer needed. The Medium voltage UPS project was successfully commissioned and handed over in end of May 2024.
